Great is Thy Faithfulness

Great is Thy Faithfulness – Lamentations 3:23

Every once in a while a true love story comes along that is so powerful that you are drawn in to discover the faithfulness of God to those who love Him. Even more amazing is that while this particular story played out over many years in Africa, its message is eternal and lifts the heart to praise and thank our glorious God.

This story is about Bob and Myrtle Overstreet and their life as missionaries in Africa. It is a story about two people who fell in love with the Lord and then with one another. From the very beginning of their missionary encounter for the Lord, they began praising God for His faithfulness through good and difficult times.

Without fail, the Lord guided and protected this missionary couple over the years as they traveled across the globe to minister God’s love to the various ethnic groups in Mali, Africa. God alone knows the full impact they had on their family, to those in Mali, and now to those at home in Minnesota where the couple reside in a comfortable retirement home.

Now looking back over the years of many blessings, Bob was led to tell the story in an autobiography about the faithfulness of God in his life and members of his family.

About God’s faithfulness Bob writes, “I have sought to follow God’s footsteps throughout my life since coming to Christ. I know others in my family have done the same.  As I considered how to describe God’s faithfulness in our lives and ministries, He reminds me time and again, “Praise Me for what I have done for, in and through you.”

Bob continues by saying the story of he and his family revolves around situations God has taken them through to reveal His unfailing faithfulness; and that these situations most always revolve around individuals God has brought into their lives. Bob refers to these situations involving people as god-incidences.

Certainly we’ve not always enjoyed a clear road in front of us, says Bob. More than once we’ve had moments of frustration as we traveled the path He laid out for us. God always kept us encouraged and without fail showed us the way through even the most trying of times.  Bob went on to say he prays that as family, friends, and colleagues read their story they will give God all praise and glory.

Within the Bob’s autobiography one dear friend, Linda Wahl, wrote,

I have had the pleasure of knowing Bob and Myrtle for the past four years. God introduced me to Myrtle in a Bible Study we both attended at Berean Baptist Church.  From the first time I met Myrtle I knew she was a woman who loved Jesus.  Immediately I saw His love through her and was drawn to her kind and gentle spirit. She has a hunger and love for the precious Word of God which is foundational for living out her life.  I thank God for the model she has been as a faithful prayer warrior for me and my family, for the godly wisdom she has given me, and for the God honoring way she lives her life.

Shortly after meeting Myrtle, I had the joy of meeting Bob. Immediately I was drawn to his joyful spirit, his genuine love for God, His kingdom, and the Gospel. He lives life boldly sharing Jesus and is ready to serve and help people in or out of the church whenever there is an opportunity.  What a blessing God has given me and my family through our friendship with Bob and Myrtle.  They love the Lord, and they live life “On Mission” whether they are in Africa, Nebraska, or in Minnesota. They are faithful servants of our Lord Jesus Christ and have greatly impacted the Kingdom of God

In addition to Linda’s loving and gracious comments, others within the autobiography wrote similarly. While Bob and Myrtle have many favorite Bible verses, the one most appropriate to summarize these devoted missionaries’ faithfulness in the missionfield is:

O Lord, Thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise Thy Name; for Thou hast done wonderful things; Thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. (Isaiah 25:1)

In closing, you are encouraged to read this love story captured in Bob’s and Myrtle’s autobiography chronicling God’s great faithfulness. But when reading the autobiography, Bob prays you will pause on occasion to give thanks to the Lord of Glory and remember we can do nothing apart from Him (John 15:5). Remember also what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do for those who faithfully love and follow Him.

Surely, all of us have much to be thankful for as we lift up Christ Jesus who is faithful and true!
