Discernment

Guard Your Heart

The Apostle Paul cautions believers to stand firm in faith and keep watch for those advancing false gospels and performing counterfeit miracles, signs, and lying wonders. The apostle warned the falling away from the faith would sweep through the church just before the Second Coming of Christ, and the event so cleverly devised by the powers of darkness that many (including clergy) would never see it coming (Matthew 24:4-5; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12; 1 John 4:1).

Paul warns those led astray did not receive the love of the truth that they might be saved (2 Thessalonians 2: 9-10). They did not know Scripture well enough to discern true from false. C H Spurgeon takes the words of Paul one step farther and is quoted to have said: “Discernment is not simply a matter of telling the difference between what is right and wrong; rather it is the difference between right and almost right.”

About the gift of discernment A W Tozer writes,

Among the gifts of the Spirit, scarcely any one is of greater practical usefulness than the gift of discernment. This gift should be highly valued and frankly sought as being almost indispensable in these critical times when the vast majority of those in the church are being led astray by strange doctrines, bizarre imaginations and even miraculous works from the evil one.

The gift of discernment will enable us to distinguish the chaff from the wheat and to divide the manifestations of the flesh and the devil from the operations of the Spirit. [1]

Tozer wrote these words more than fifty-years ago. Think of it. If what A W wrote was true then, imagine what he would write today. If deception begins with a lie then the remedy for deception begins with truth (John 16:13).

A hurricane out to sea is harmless until it sweeps inland destroying everything in its path. And like a hurricane, deception is harmless until it sweeps inland over unguarded hearts unaware of their peril (Proverbs 4:2-3). The Apostle Paul warns that in the last days deception will sweep through the church and lead unguarded hearts away to another Jesus and another gospel.

Guard Your Heart is an online presence, a ministry seeking to carefully examine deception in the heart and church (Acts 17:11).

Guard Your Heart encourages every believer to become a Berean by reading the Bible daily to discern truth from error (Acts 17:11). We are called to be good stewards of the Word of God (Joshua 1:8; Matthew 4:4). The Apostle Paul encourages believers to “Examine everything cautiously; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil” (Ephesians 6:17; 1 Thessalonians 5:21–22).

The biblical admonition to every believer is a warning to discern right from almost right! Discernment* for the believer is never an option, but a calling to keep watch over the issues of the heart (Luke 2:8).

*Discernment is not to be mistaken for divisiveness. Using Scripture to call out error is never divisive; it is discernment at work in the church defending truth from error, the sheep from wolves (Acts 17:11, Jude 3).

Just as political correctness is being used to silence free speech, so too is ecumenical unity among all religions being used to silence biblical discernment. Calling out false movements and teachings is not divisive; it is discerning truth from error, doing the will of God. (Jude 1:4; 2 Peter 2:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:3; 2 Timothy 4:4; and Romans 16:17)
